You may not have heard of backtheFup.com, but we have been providing computer backup software and hardware since 2005. It has been quite a journey.
Our previous hosting company didn't make a backup of our original website before their web servers were attacked by bears. The bears gorged on the web servers and flossed with the backup tapes. All our data was lost in the savage attack. We made the mistake of relying solely on someone else to do our website backup for us.
Up to that point we were actually using encrypted carrier pigeons to store our USB flash drives offsite, but our birds got the flu and contaminated our offsite backups with a deadly virus. All our data was lost from the deadly outbreak.
It became clear to us this wasn't the best way to backup and protect our information, so we purchased some lions. Our network storage servers are hidden deep in a cave, but now no one can physically get to the information with all the lions mulling around the entrance. Our original web designer needed to retrieve some of the information and the lions actually ate her.
We had to find a new programmer after that. It was hard to find someone who would work in these conditions, but we think we finally have the right match. We now have an experienced lion tamer who manages our flow of data and a master of illusions to help with the web design and interface.
Yeah, none of this is completely true. The point is there is no 100% correct answer when it comes to a complete disaster recovery solution. There are USB flash drives for some offices. Maybe a DVD burner for another. A tape drive might make sense for a few or offsite disk to disk backups, but a combination is often the best way to keep a business up and running.
There are many questions to consider when selecting a computer backup solution. Where is the data located? How much data do you need to store? How often does the data change? What is the timeframe available when performing the backup? What special services are you running? Do you need special agents to backup those services?
Data backup should be part of your office routine like making the coffee in the morning or turning the lights off when you leave. Computers are what we do! We already have experience with the lions. Let us help you help yourself!
